Student Athlete of the Week
November 6, 2008

Sophomore Jordan Cinko wasn't sure what to expect when he enrolled as a new student at Richland High School this year, but quarterbacking the Rams' junior varsity football team to a perfect 8-0 record wasn't high on the former Central Cambria running back's list of expectations.

"Coming from Central Cambria and being the new guy, I had to work really hard to learn the plays," said Cinko, who regularly stays at the school late into the evening practicing and working out in the weight room.

That work ethic has helped Cinko find playing time at the varsity level, perhaps earlier than he had initially expected.

"It's part to show that I'm a (dedicated) player. But I also like to show what I've got," he said.

Through eight games, he had 23 carries for 87 yards, three receptions for 14 yards and completed one pass for eight yards, seeing time at a variety of positions.

"Jordan's a utility player for us at the varsity level. He's a very hard worker, and we've employed him at the running back position. He also does some lining up at quarterback to give us some different options there with his threat to run and pass as well," said Rams head coach Brandon Bailey.

"I don't think he came to Richland with the intention of playing quarterback, but he was part of that equation. He's an athlete, a leader and he helps his teammates have an opportunity to win each time they go out on the field."

Cinko said switching positions so frequently is not an easy task. "There are times where it's a little bit confusing, but I get the job done."

Cinko is hoping his experience on the junior varsity level — particularly a nail-biting 34-30 win against Bedford where the Rams held the Bisons scoreless on a last-minute goal-line stand — will help him contribute more with the varsity squad in the future.

"That game against Bedford, that was a big team there. They had a lot of varsity kids come down to play JV. We just had to take it to them and play our best."

Bailey, too, believes Cinko could have an expanded role with the Rams in the years to come.

"He'll have a good future here at Richland," he said. "He's a good kid."

Cinko is the son of Fred and Missy Cinko of Richland.
